You are no doubt right that caturyuga is mentioned in the Mahabharata. This however does not mean that the Mahabharata was open till Aryabhata's time, because Aryabhata is NOT the originator of the yuga scheme. The scheme is described in the Manusmrti. It is an interesting example of how astronomers borrowed concepts from scriptures for their own use.

Sir

I am a former scientist of ISRO (2001-2006) and now a researcher on Mahabharata (doing on personal interest). I liked your article on Rahu and Ketu and agree with most of your findings. What interested me most is your statement that Mahabharata text was closed by 100 BCE. I had done some work on the same question and concluded that Mahabharata was open till 500 CE and contains Aryabhata's 4.32 million year long Chaturyuga definition (476 AD to 550 AD) . http://ancientvoice.wikidot.com/article:kali-yuga2.
This is found in Santi Parva (http://ancientvoice.wikidot.com/src-mbh-12:section-230).

Please have a look and let me know what you think. The closing date of Mahabharata is very important for my research work.
